 JAMA
Older adults at high risk for drug interactions
At least one in 25 older adults, about 2.2 million people in the United States, take multiple drugs in combinations that can produce a harmful drug-drug interaction, and half of these interactions involve a nonprescription medication.

Vitamin D deficiency associated with greater rates of Cesarean sections
Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center found that pregnant women who are vitamin D deficient are also at an increased risk for delivering a baby by Cesarean section as compared to pregnant women who are not vitamin D deficient. Public Release: 24-Dec-2008
 Neuron
Brain starvation as we age appears to trigger Alzheimer’s
A slow, chronic starvation of the brain as we age appears to be a major trigger of a biochemical process that causes some forms of Alzheimer’s disease. A new study from Northwestern University has found when the brain doesn’t get enough sugar glucose — as when cardiovascular disease restricts blood flow to the brain — a process is launched that produces the sticky clumps of protein that appear to be a cause of Alzheimer’s.

Hormones Increase Frequency Of Inherited Form Of Migraine In Women

(December 26, 2008) — Familial hemiplegic migraine (FHM) is an inherited form of severe migraine that is accompanied by visual disturbances known as aura. As with other types of migraine, it affects women more frequently than men. New research in mice has now provided insight into events in the brain that lead to FHM and demonstrated that hormones produced by the ovaries increase susceptibility to FHM. … > full story

New Evidence That Humans Make Aspirin’s Active Principle — Salicylic Acid (December 26, 2008) — Scientists are reporting evidence that humans can make their own salicylic acid — the material formed when aspirin breaks down in the body. Salicylic acid, which is responsible for aspirin’s renowned effects in relieving pain and inflammation, may be the first in a new class of bioregulators, according to a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. … > full story

OUR COMMENTS

Pressing or rubbing out certain areas of the hand and foot help to increase blood flow, circulate electrical impulses and break apart ‘crunchy’ deposits interfering with health.  This self help technique really works.

Advanced CT Scans Valuable To Check For Clogged Arteries (December 8, 2008) — In a development that researchers say is likely to quell concerns about the value of costly computed tomography scans to diagnose coronary artery blockages, researchers report solid evidence that the newer, more powerful 64-CT scans can easily and correctly identify people with major blood vessel disease and is nearly as accurate as invasive coronary angiography. … > full story

Robotics Integrated With Human Body In Near Future? Technology Gulf Between ‘Have’ And ‘Have Nots’ Predicted By 2020 (December 8, 2008) — What is the potential future impact of robots on society? New conclusions show that the enormous automation capacity of robots and their ability to interact with humans will cause a technological imbalance over the next 12 years between those who have them and those who do not. One significant area of research may well result in the insertion of robots into our bodies, such as intelligent implants in the brain, which will improve our rational thought, and nanorobots to be released into the blood to clean our arteries. … > full story
