Phenylpropanolamine (PPA)

  • Many cold medicines linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in the brain) among women ages 18-49 in the three days after starting use of the medication.
  • Problems were not found in men, but the FDA recommended that everyone (even children) seek alternative medicine.
  • Pharmaceutical companies have known about this danger for years, we unfortunately, did not.

The following medications contain Phenylpropanolamine :-
1. Acutrim Diet Gum Appetite Suppressant
2. Acutrim Plus Dietary Supplements
3 Acutrim Maximum Strength Appetite Control
4. Alka-Seltzer Plus Children’s Cold Medicine Effervescent
5. Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold medicine (Cherry or Orange )
6. Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine Original
7. Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Cough Medicine Effervescent
8. Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Flu Medicine

30. Robitussin CF
31. Tavist-D 12-Hour Relief of Sinus & Nasal Congestion
32. Triaminic DM Cough Relief
33. Triaminic Expectorant Chest & Head
34. Triaminic Sy rup Co ld & ; Amp; Amp Allergy
35. Triaminic Triaminicol Cold & Cough

I just called the 800# on the container for Triaminic and they informed me that they are voluntarily recalling the following medicines because of a certain ingredient that is causing strokes and seizures in children:
1 Orange 3D Cold & Allergy Cherry (Pink)
2. 3D Cold & Cough Berry
3. 3D Cough Relief Yellow 3D Expectorant

They are asking you to call them at 800-548-3708 with the lot number on the box so they can send you postage for you to send it back to them, and they will also issue you a refund.

To confirm these findings, please take time to check http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopage/ppa/

Endometriosis alleviated, finally.

endo

Endometriosis.

I had this pain 25 out of 28 days each month for a number of years.  It was diagnosed through symptomology first, then surgical laporoscapy.

Doctors recommended:

  1. Morphine
  2. birth control
  3. laporoscapy surgery every couple years

I choose the laporoscapy surgery.  Unfortunately, because I still had the candida overgrowth, the endo returned within a few months.  I began searching alternative medicine archives.

Alternative Approach:

I tried this for 3 years, without cheating.

  1. organic, mostly raw food diet, no hormones or antibiotics
  2. purified water
  3. excercize (5-45 min day on mini trampoline, aerobic, stretching)
  4. avoided 37 food allergens (including dairy, wheat, egg, some beans, etc)
  5. no refined sugar, caffiene, chemical preservatives or food dyes
  6. many brands of supplements (starting with cheap ones, ending with expensive brands.
  7. followed candida diet (no sugars, vinegars, processed meats, etc)

After 3 years of disciplined struggle, I still had Endometriosis and systemic Candida Overgrowth.

What finally worked:

I got rid of endo and the candida infection with Shaklee’s technology based products. :
  1. ALKALINE CELLS: Created with Energizing Soy, Vitalizer, Osteomatrix & Alfalfa
  2. DIET: As Shaklee strengthened my body and my food allergies were overcome, I gradually add in more foods.
  3. CANDIDA: killing the candida overgrowth (which is usually the root cause of endo.)
  4. SCAR TISSUE: dissolved with Fiber Plan
  5. ENDOMETRIAL LINING: repaired with antioxidants (A, B, C, E)
  6. NERVOUS SYSTEM: balanced with B-complex
  7. HORMONES/ CELLULAR REJUVINATION: balanced with lots of Energizing Soy Protein
  8. HORMONES / INFLAMMATION: balanced with essential oils (omegaguard, gla, lecithin)
  9. DNA REPAIR: repaired damage DNA with Vivix  (which also rebalances hormones, keeps candida astray and keeps inflamation down)
  10. EXCERCIZE: (5-45 min day on mini trampoline, aerobic, stretching)

Will it alleviate your pain?

Do you have endo or candida overgrowth?

  • Take quiz to find out.  (endo quiz, candida quiz)
  • If you give your correct contact info, I’ll share and discuss your results with you.

Overwhelmed? Stressed?

bummed-out-cow

  • What is making you feel overwhelmed?
    • LEARNING CURVE?  It’s natural and expected that our minds will be on overdrive every time we learn a new skill, subject, job, etc.  It’s part of the learning curve.  In time, all the new skills will come automatically.  Now, I give myself a pat on the back with each new skill and a little hug of patience when I don’t have the skill yet.
    • TOO COMPLICATED OR NO PLAN?  The simpler it is, the better it will work.  If overwhelmed, it helps to clarified your plan & make sure you haven’t gone away from it. I’m learning to make a list, keep the objective simple and clear and only do activities which directly relate to accomplishing the task.  Then, I get to check mark it!
      • Here’s an example: choice:  Spend 5 hrs on a newsletter to make it perfect or 1 hour simple newsletter and 4 hrs inviting or following up?  The second choice produces more income and helps more people.  With extra income I can hire someone to make the newsletter and use the remaining hour for follow up.  Hmmm.
    • PERFECTIONIST/CRITICAL?  Have some ‘mean voices’ in the mind that ‘lie’ about how you should do everything perfectly?  The cool thing about free will is that you get to turn the voices off if you want to.
    • DISTRACTION?  Others control your time?  Can’t say no?  No routine for household peace?  Decide what’s most important and focus there, not everywhere.  Make sure it’s your definition of important, not everyone else’s demands.

Do you relate to any of these?

Sugar Sickness Alternatives

sugar

Deadly sweet? ‌

  • Refined sugar is a simple carbohydrate because its been stripped of its nutrients. A sugar plant has nutrients. Sugar cane and molasses are more directly utilized, not extracted, and carry more of the nutrients to metabolize sugar.  more about sugar
  • Sugar drives insulin levels to abnormal heights, causing Type 2 Diabetes or Syndrome X.
  • Sugar depresses the immune system by slowing the ability of white blood cells to kill infection.  Think of a group of kids just after a sugary cereal breakfast; they’re very susceptible to passing around viruses and bacteria.
    • “Eating or drinking 100 grams (8 tbsp.) of sugar, the equivalent of about two cans of soda, can reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill germs by forty percent.  The immune-suppressing effect of sugar starts less than thirty minutes after ingestion and may last for five hours.” (from Feeding Your Immune System)
  • Our body deals with excess sugar by creating more insulin.
    • What is the purpose of Insulin‌?  It is a hormone secreted by the pancreas. Its main function is to store energy from food. Only a small amount of carbs are stored as glycogen, the rest are converted into triglycerides. Yes, triglycerides!
    • Why is insulin fluctuation problematic?  Cells become resistant when too much insulin is pumped. They turn off their insulin receptors and are not ready to receive energy from food. The cells are trying to protect themselves from the excess, so they send a signal that they’ve had enough.
  • Sugar depletes B vitamins and harms the nervous system.  Adrenaline is made from B vitamins; stress causes adrenaline production.  If too much adrenaline enters the system, cortisol is produced.  Cortisol harms many processes, including the nervous system.
  • Sugar harms digestion because it feeds candida which can lead to candida infection.
  • Sugar creates an acidic body system. (not acidic blood ph, but acidic cells created by consuming certain food types)  Acidic cells lead to all types of disease (allergy, cancer, diabetes, endo, candida, arthritis, etc.)

Alternatives to refined sugar? ‌

  • Artificial sweetners:
    • The food industry has tried to create chemical imitations for sugar to help us avoid calories. Water is the only drink that truly has zero calories. A chemical concoction like diet soda dehydrates the body because it takes water away to dissolve and try to break down those chemicals.  All of the chemical sweetners have side effects.
    • Aspartame, or Nutra Sweet (brand name), is found in so many drinks, yogurts, gums, usually in food items traditionally sweetened with sugar, which people have decided they want to avoid, either to avoid calorie intake or tooth decay.
      • When the FDA approved aspartame, it was never intended to become so widely used, and the threshold for consumption by which they figured it would be “safe” for humans is usually surpassed by anyone taking more than one serving per day.
      • It was tested only in its powder form and then it was stated that it does not produce cancer in the animals, but does produce brain lesions.
      • In its liquid form it turns into poisonous wood alcohol (methanol). Methanol is stored in the liver and accumulates.
      • Discovered by accident through biological warfare research and has become entrenched in our food supply.
      • Aspartame is linked to the rise in the rate of childhood seizures. (adapted from Chemical Crazy and Insulin Resistant by Sherrie Attila)
  • Natural Sweetners:
    • Sucanat is non-refined cane sugar which retains its molasses content. The pure dried cane juice is extracted by mechanical processes, heated and cooled at which point the small brown grainy crystals are formed. (from WikiPedia)
    • Xylitol is extracted from fruit, usually strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries. It is safe and good for preventing tooth decay. Many chewing gums and natural toothpastes are made with xylitol.
      • Both sucanat and xylitol are able to be measured and used in a way similar to white sugar in cooking and baking.
    • Agave Nectar is a cactus plant similar to aloe vera. It doesn’t effect blood sugar levels.
    • Stevia is a sweet herb, not a sugary substance. It can be in liquid or powder and is measured in drops and has no effect on blood sugar.
    • Honey sugars are surrounded by nutrients to metabolize the sugar.  In recipies, increase flour or decrease liquid, add a bit of baking soda and powder.
    • Maple Syrup sugars are surrounded by nutrients to metabolize the sugar
    • Molasses is sugar which is not refined or whitened. It contains a good compliment of B vitamins. The strong flavor makes it inappropriate for some recipes. Available in granule form.
    • Ground dates add sweetness and fiber.
    • Applesauce adds moisture and sweetness.
    • Ground grapes add moisture and sweetness.

Sugar may be entrenched in our diets, but nutritious additions and alternatives can be found. Some families may wish to delete sugar completely. Artificial sweeteners should be avoided. Any change you can make to control sugar intake will be an improvement, and step by step, we can all build healthier habits.

Water bottles – heart disease and diabetes?

JAMA Raises Concerns about BPA

–Dr. Jamie McManus, M.D., FAAFP
Chairman, Medical Affairs, Health Sciences & Education

BPA – what is it?  It is a chemical modifier used in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Polycarbonate plastics typically are clear and hard and have many applications, including use in certain food and beverage packaging such as water and infant bottles, as well as compact discs, impact-resistant safety equipment, and medical devices.  About 7 billion pounds of BPA are produced worldwide each year.

Problems BPA causes?  cardiovascular disease (coronary heart disease, heart attack, angina), diabetes, liver enzyme abnormalities, brain damage, developmental abnormalities, precancerous changes, metabolic syndrome, etc.

Why BPA causes these problems?  Possibly, BPA is a hormone disruptor or modulator and causes pancreatic cells to increase insulin production.

Who is at risk?  In 2007, the CDC found BPA in the urine of nearly 93% tested.  This indicates widespread exposure to BPA in the US.  Who has the highest levels?   Children, then females, then males.

Shaklee’s response:  Shaklee’s first commitment is to product safety and, as such, our product packaging is free of BPA.

Tips to reduce Exposure to BPA:

  1. Avoid Reusable Polycarbonate (labeled #7) plastic water and baby bottles, which tend to be hard, clear and colorful. Choose polyethylene or glass.
  2. Avoid Polycarbonate Plastic Food Containers and Tableware. These may also be labeled “PC” underneath a plastic code #7 in the recycling triangle on the bottom of the container. Use instead: BPA-free plastics with the recycling labels #1, #2, or #4 and #5, ceramic or glass. Soft or cloudy-colored plastic containers do not usually contain BPA.
  3. Minimize the use of canned food & drink, especially tomato sauces because the high acidity causes more chemical leaching. Choose foods which are fresh, frozen, or stored in glass. The recent study by EWG found BPA in more than half of the 97 canned goods that were tested.
  4. Ask your dentist for BPA-free sealants and composite fillings.
  5. Avoid microwaving or heating any food in plastic containers because heat may release chemicals into food.
